Planet of the Apes' Estella Warren charged with drink-driving and battery

Actor who appeared in Tim Burton's 2001 remake could face jail on charges relating to allegations that she assaulted a police officer after crashing into parked cars

An actor who appeared in Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes remake has been charged with drink-driving and hit-and-run following a late-night smash last month.

Estella Warren, a former synchronised swimmer turned model/actor who played the mute human woman Daena in the poorly received 2001 reworking, also stands accused of battery of a police officer and resisting arrest. Police were called on 23 May when Warren allegedly tried to leave the scene without providing her information after crashing her Toyota Prius into three parked vehicles on Harper Avenue in west Hollywood. She was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of driving under the influence, when, according to police, she proceeded to kick an officer.

Once detained, Warren's outlandish behaviour allegedly continued. It is alleged she managed to slip out of her handcuffs and briefly escape from the room where she was being held, though she was swiftly recaptured.

The 40-year-old Canadian actor has worked steadily, if not prominently, in Hollywood since her high-profile but non-speaking role in Planet of the Apes. She faces up to two and a half years in jail if convicted on all counts.
