Lil Wayne's new album is 'totally done'

Tha Carter IV, which could be the rapper's final album, will be preceded by a mixtape called Sorry for the Wait

After months of delays, Lil Wayne has announced the release date of his ninth ? and possibly final ? studio album. Tha Carter IV, due on 29 August, will be preceded by an apologetic mixtape called Sorry for the Wait.

"The album is totally done," Weezy confirmed on Tuesday to MTV News. "It'll be out." This is good news to fans of the Young Money rapper: originally promised for 16 May, the album was pushed back to 21 June. "He's a perfectionist," label boss Mack Money explained. This fourth volume in Tha Carter series will still use the previously revealed album cover, showing an even lil'ler Wayne in graduation gear.

Before the LP arrives, Lil Wayne will reward fans with a free 10-track mixtape. Like 2009's No Ceilings, Sorry for the Wait will have Weezy rapping over other people's beats. The mixtape's only reported guest is Lil B.

In an interview in June, Lil Wayne warned his forthcoming album could mark his retirement. "Tha Carter IV might be my last one," the 28-year-old told XXL. "I'm bowing out still on top ... This is the real truth, I honestly think it's unfair to my kids ... [Aged] about 30, 31, 32, I gotta get ready [to retire]."

While Lil Wayne released Rebirth, a rock album, in 2010, he is mainly known for Tha Carter series. Although it saw only moderate success in the UK, Tha Carter III was the bestselling album of 2008 in the US, selling more than a million copies in its first week.
